Whilst in Adelaide, our friend Sophie planned a day trip for us to visit Urimbirra Wildlife Park. Having been in Oz for over a month, I’ve been to a fair share of wildlife parks, and I have to say Urimbirra is currently ranking best in my books.
An hours drive outside Adelaide, and just a 5 minute drive from Victor Harbour (great spot for lunch by the way), Urimbirra is located in Hindmarsh Valley.
We visited during the week and when we arrived I didn’t know if we had the right place. It was so quiet. Not a tourist bus in sight. I don’t know about you but some parks I have visited are just jam packed with tourists that it doesn’t make for a good day out.
But I couldn’t believe it, we went through to purchase our tickets ($14 per adult) and staff said we’d come on a great day. Despite two other families we practically had the place to ourselves!
We arrived in time for the 11am Koala experience which needless to say was awesome! It was my first time getting up close and personal with these gorgeous creatures and they are just the sweetest! They feel like a teddy bear.
As well as Koalas, Urimbirra is home to over 400 Australian native animals including, dingos, snakes, lizards, crocodiles, wallabies, wombats and of course Kangaroos!!
There are a lot of kangaroos in Urimbirra and all are super friendly! Instead of wanting absolutely nothing do with you, these kangaroos are the complete opposite. When they saw you, they came hopping!
Don’t forget to buy some kangaroo food, they’ll love you even more, but be careful as they move fast and if you’re not looking they’ll whip that bag of food right out of your hand. 
The picture above shows just a fraction of kangaroos that lived in Urimbirra. I thought it would be a good idea to walk behind this lot and get a picture pretending to be apart of their roo gang.
However, I accidentally snapped a twig with my feet, which startled one of the sleeping roos and made the whole gang jump in all sorts of crazy directions. I’ve never seen anything like it. I felt like I was Mufasa in the wildebeest stampede!
After saying hello to every single kangaroo I could (I don’t think I’ll ever get bored of them) we took a walk through the rainbow lorikeets aviary and then met some of the resident farmyard pets including sheep, goats, rabbits, guinea pigs and an alpaca. I now really want an alpaca farm…
If your brave enough you can also handle the snakes at 4pm with one of Urimbirra’s snake handlers. Personally not my cup of tea. Farley on the other hand, is desperate to find a wild snake…what is wrong with the boy!
Anyway, I thought I’d share my day out at Urimbirra with you because more people should know about what an amazing place it is. Owned and operated by a South Australian family, staff were fabulous and the animals were so friendly and were very happy in their environment. A great place to visit for all ages.
